Relations with French research teams

   UPR 299 maintains regular close contact with: the Centre d'Etude de l'Inde et de l'Asie du Sud (UMR. 6564, headed by B. Ripert); the Unité Mixte de Recherche (UMR) 8047 "Centre de recherche sur les civilisations de l'Asie orientale" (headed by A. Horiuchi); the Laboratoire d'Ethnologie et de Sociologie Comparative (UMR 8155, headed by G. Tarabout) at the University of Paris Ouest-Nanterre-La Défense, as well as the geography research unit within the same university at postgraduate degree level; "Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies" (DEA) in geography and development practices; the geography research unit at the University of Paris VII, the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes; LACITO (UMR 7107 Langues et civilisations à tradition orale).

  The "Inner Borders" network, run by Philippe Ramirez, is managed in collaboration with the Lille Institut D'Etudes Politiques and involves researchers at the University of Paris Paris Ouest Nanterre-La Défense as well as the Hamburg Institut für Asienkunde.

Relations with foreign teams and international institutes

Centre for Nepalese and Asian Studies (C.N.A.S.), Tribhuvan University, Nepal

  Our links with this research institute go back a long way. Since April 2000, a scientific exchange agreement has enabled the unit's researchers working in Nepal, especially those who are on long assignments, to benefit from official affiliation with CNAS which facilitates administrative formalities for temporary residency.

Department of anthropology, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong (India)

   As North-East India has, since 1995, partially opened to foreign research, after years of total closure, a scientific cooperation agreement was signed in December 2004 between our team and the Shillong University Department of Anthropology, which is the largest in the region. This provides scientific and institutional links which are indispensable for access to this privileged research ground.

Social Science Academy in the Autonomous Region of Tibet (China)

   Thanks to the efforts of researchers from our unit, an agreement which is indispensable to any research in the autonomous region of Tibet, was signed on 30 June 1996 between the CNRS and the Social Science Academy of Tibet (Lhasa). It was renewed in October 2001.

Institute of Ethnological and Anthropological Studies (former Institute of National Minorities) in Beijing (Chinese Academy of Social Science)

   Three Franco-Chinese conferences on Tibetan studies have been organised in partnership with this institute. Discussions are being held to work together on a common research project.

Centre for Tibetological Studies in Beijing

   This was one of the Chinese partners in organising the two Franco-Chinese conferences on Tibetan studies. Discussions are being held on common publication and research projects in this field.

French Institute in Puducherry (Institut français de Pondichery - India)

Olivia Aubriot was on secondment at this institute from 2005 to 2007.

Gérard Toffin is member of the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of the CNRS's Centres Asie.

Delhi Human Science Centre (India)

  Though the disciplines covered by the Centre only marginally tie in with the fields researched by our research unit, we maintain regular ties with this institute.

Network of the European Bulletin of Himalayan Research

   This network includes the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, the Südasien Institut (SAI) in Heidelberg and UPR 299. Besides the publication of a scientific review which is managed alternately by the three institutes, the network organises seminars and study sessions.

The Tibetan and Himalayan Digital Project (Virginia University, USA)

   This involves a vast digital multimedia documentation centre on the Tibetan area based at the University of Virginia (http://www.thdl.org). Fernand Meyer is on its scientific advisory committee.

International Association for Ladakh Studies

   Pascale Dollfus is a member of the International Association for Ladakh Studies, an association founded in 1987 in order to "facilitate contacts between all those interested in studies carried out in Ladakh or on Ladakh".

ICIMOD

   The Centre d’Etudes Himalayennes (CEH) is an active member of the ICIMOD "Publications' Exchange Programme", a programme through which it regularly receives publications from this institute.
