Gérard Toffin, ethnologue, a commencé ses recherches sur l’Himalaya en 1970. Il a travaillé principalement sur les communautés rurales et urbaines Néwar de la vallée de Katmandou au Népal. Il a également mené des enquêtes chez les Pahari (Pihi) du district de Lalitpur (Godavari et Lele), puis, dans les collines népalaises, sur les Tamang du Ganesh Himal et les Indo-Népalais (Parbatiya) des districts de Gulmi et d’Argha Khanci, ainsi qu’en Inde et dans le Tarai népalais oriental sur la secte des Pranami. ll a travaillé au Népal en équipe interdisciplinaire avec des agronomes, des architectes et des écologistes (Programme Salme). De 2008 à 2012, il a participé à l’ANR Just-India, A Joint Programme on Justice and Governance in India and South Asia, pour la partie népalaise.
Il s’est intéressé à la civilisation matérielle, à l’organisation sociale et aux religions des populations himalayennes. Il a mené et continue de mener des recherches en anthropologie de l’espace, tout particulièrement sur les villes asiatiques, ainsi que sur diverses questions touchant aux religions de l’Inde et de l’Himalaya. II a également entrepris il y a quelques années une recherche sur les écritures de l’ethnologie et l’histoire des savoirs anthropologiques.
Aujourd’hui, Gérard Toffin conduit principalement des recherches sur le théâtre néwar de la vallée de Katmandou et les mutations politiques, sociales, religieuses et culturelles du Népal contemporain.
Il a fondé et dirigé une collection, “Chemins de l’ethnologie”, aux Éditions du CNRS et aux Éditions de la Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Paris. Il est membre des Conseils Scientifiques de la BULAC, des Centres Asie du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères et du CNRS, et de la Nepal School of Social Sciences and Humanities (Nepal).
