Nyerang ka-ne in ? Where do you come from? Anthropological approach to community-building processes in Zangskar, Indian Himalayas
Salomé Deboos
Abstract
The question "where do you come from? "is one you can’t escape when you’re in Zangskar or in neighbouring valleys. The purpose of this presentation is to review the change in the way zangskar-pa define themselves today compared to how they presented themselves to me twenty years earlier.
In what way does the inclusion of a community in a political reality, on the one hand, and in an international monetary economic reality, on the other, lead members of this community to reposition themselves as individuals and/or persons in their relationship with each other, even though their relationship with a territorial and religious community is still alive?
Based on anthropological observations in the field, I analyse the issues regarding the changes that have disrupted the social, political and economic structures of these communities whose social relationships have long been analysed in terms of kinship ties.
