Résumé : The Gadaba belong to the many millions of people living mostly in the hilly areas between the two big rivers Ganges and Godaveri. With the neighboring indigenous communities living on the Koraput plateau of the mountain range called Eastern Ghats they share a peculiar feature. Namely, that they traditionally both cultivate rice and millet as complementary crops in two different types of fields ; not only rice (like in the plains) or only millets (like many shifting cultivators of the wider region). This paper will be concerned with the cultural implications of this complementarity — the mutuality of plants and people — which becomes particularly manifest in rituals.
