Article by Gérard Toffin (CEH) : Les folkloristes népalais, entre sentiment national et diversité des cultures (XXe début XXIe siècle)

published in Bérose - Encyclopédie internationale des histoires de l’anthropologie, Paris, 2020

The Nepalese folklore movement, that is to say intellectuals and other persons in the country who analyse and seek to highlight local, vernacular cultural heritage which is still historically and geographically defined, has not yet received sufficient attention. It is nevertheless an important movement in this Himalayan country’s intellectual and scientific landscape, somewhat removed from anthropology but dedicated to the study of the different aspects of popular culture. For the time being, it is limited to groups of scholars, specialists in literary studies. Although strongly represented at the Nepal Academy, this is not the case at the university. Very few foreign, European or North American scholars, specialists in Nepal, contribute to this work.
